ACTS: The Preaching of the Church

From the very early days in the life of the people of God, even in the OT, preaching took the form of a commentary on the sacred text of Scripture. For almost 50 years, PlanoBibleChapel has highlighted and emphasized the preaching of the Bible to transform lives. The reason we preach and teach the Bible is to stimulate faith that results in changed lives so that either the way we are thinking or feeling or acting is either different or enhanced and encouraged by what we hear in each sermon with the ultimate goal of God being glorified.

In the book of Acts, on the day of Pentecost, we see the public preaching of God’s Word was essential for the Church and resulted in changed lives (Acts 2:14-40). Even today, that’s what preaching is about: changed lives to God’s glory.

The Meaning of the Resurrection

All of Christianity hangs on the Resurrection! Even the Apostle Paul realized this and said, “If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain - and so is your faith” (1 Corinthians 15:14). If the Resurrection did not really happen, as Christians, we’re wasting our lives, wasting our time on Sunday mornings, wasting our treasures! We should be out playing sports, getting caught up at the office, working in the yard, or catching up on sleep!

However, if Jesus really did rise from the dead, then life has way more meaning than sports, work, a beautiful garden, or sleep! What proof do we have of the Resurrection of Jesus? What does it really mean for us?

Palm Sunday Expectations

Are your expectations setting you up for disappointment? We all have expectations for our lives. What we want out of life. What we want to become. One of the keys to happiness is managing our expectations with people and with circumstances.

The improper expectations can lead to disappointment. Even when it comes to Jesus. What were the expectations of the people who welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem on the first Palm Sunday (Matthew 21:8-11)? What are our expectations of Jesus as we follow Him today?

ACTS: Power for the Church

Sometimes when we read the Bible and see God performing miracles and hear Bible stories about His people doing supernatural things by His Spirit, we conclude, based on our personal experience, that miracles are ancient history. Parting of the Red Sea, Walls of Jericho, David and Goliath, Daniel in the Lions’ Den, Jesus healing the blind and lame, etc.

When do we hear and where do we see God’s supernatural power in the Church and in Christians today? In Acts 2:1-13, we see God move in the lives of believers in Christ who are continually filled with the Holy Spirit.

JOSHUA:
Be Strong and Courageous

Winter and Spring 2016

Most of the time, courageous faith doesn’t look very courageous. It’s not the absence of fear, it’s the presence of faith in God and the promises of His Word.
