ACTS: Priorities for Ministry

No one likes to wait. As men and women of action, we want and expect instant results. So when forced to wait, we get frustrated, anxious, and impatient. We don’t like to wait because it indicates that life is out of control and, more importantly, we’re not in control.

We discover throughout the Bible, however, that God uses significant times of waiting to prepare His people to accomplish His purposes. We want life and ministry to happen right away, but God wants us to live a different way: waiting, praying, and depending upon Him. Consider how the early Apostles were told to wait in Acts 1:4, 12-26...

ACTS: Waiting, Working, & Watching

In the Gospel of Luke, we see the life and ministry of Jesus on Earth. So what happens to His followers, when Jesus is no longer physically present? “Out of sight, out of mind can be a dangerous reality. Christ’s absence from planet Earth can cause us to focus less on Him and more on ourselves.

In truth, Jesus’ ascension (Acts 1:9-11) has resulted in benefits that would not be ours if He was still living on Earth. His ascension marks a pivotal point not only in His story, but in History. His ascension keeps us waiting, working, and watching for His return.

ACTS: Can I Get a Witness?

Imagine you’re a parent leaving instructions for your kids. You say to them, “I’m leaving for the grocery store and will be back soon. While I’m gone, I want you to vacuum every room in the house. The vacuum cleaner is in the laundry room. Use it before I get back.” So when you return, what’s the first question you ask? How would you respond if your kids said, “Well… I didn’t vacuum, but I did feed and walk the dogs. I didn’t vacuum, but I emptied the dish washer? I didn’t vacuum because I got distracted… I was too busy doing something else”

When our Lord Jesus left this Earth, He gave the disciples (that includes us today) ONE important task: Be WITNESSES to His life, death, and resurrection (Acts 1:8). Be WITNESSES of who He is and of what He has done until He returns (Acts 1:10-11).

ACTS: The Continuing Story...

The second episode (or fifth, depending on your age) in the Star Wars series, The Empire Strikes Back, came to a sudden, surprising end. With Han Solo frozen in Carbonite, and the rebellion in ruins, what would happen to Luke and Leia? We love watching movies or books with a good cliffhanger that leaves you waiting on the edge of your seat for the next one.

The Book of ACTS was Luke's long awaited sequel to the Gospel of Luke and the anticipated continuing story of Jesus Christ’s ministry on Earth through His followers (Acts 1:1-3). ACTS isn’t simply a book about doctrine or theology, it tells the story of the Church in Action that continues today.
