In the Ten Commandments, the middle one (Exod. 20:12; Deut. 5:16), is a significant encouragement for Mother’s Day. Paul repeats it in his letter to the Ephesians (Ephesians 6:1-3). Christ’s death as our representative substitute changed our relationship to the Law. Sin and the Law no longer condemn us, dominate us, or drive us, instead we are motivated to love the Lord and love others by the Spirit of God. Christ’s death in our place empowers us to truly honor the Lord and our moms. As Christians, we have received a new code that Paul called “the Law of Christ” (Gal. 6:2). It’s by remembering Jesus and living by the power of His Spirit, that we fulfill the Law of Christ which leads to life - including honoring our mothers.
