The Sacredness of Money
In her book, Total Truth, author and apologist Nancy Pearcy writes about a cultural phenomenon where evangelical Christianity has be relegated to an isolated corner of society and pushed out of the mainstream of our culture. Christianity has been pigeon-holed into this thing we do on Sunday mornings, separate from the real world. She calls this the public/private split.
One of the most common areas where we’re likely to separate public from private, and secular from sacred is with our money. What Pearcy talks about on a large, macro level, Jesus talks about on the personal, heart, and micro level in Matthew 6:19-24. Whatever we value the most inevitably occupies the center of our hearts – the center of personality that controls our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Jesus explains to us (Matthew 6:21), “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
